Flag of Belgium

This section covers specific places and locations across Belgium, one write-up at a time - starting with Brussels, where I worked for four years as a telecom expat. Belgium itself is a small, federal, and famously multilingual country wedged between France, Germany, and the Netherlands: Dutch-speaking Flanders to the north, French-speaking Wallonia to the south, and Brussels, officially bilingual, sitting right on the language border between them as both the national capital and the de facto capital of the European Union. Pictured above is the Atomium, built for the 1958 World’s Fair and still one of the country’s best-known landmarks.

Brussels - four years as a telecom expat, commuting home most weekends

·992 words·5 mins
I spent a total of four years in Brussels working in telecom, as an expat commuting home every weekend at first and later every second day. The company put me up in two corporate apartments over that time, one close to the Basilique, one close to Manneken Pis - which meant getting to know two very different corners of the city while mostly passing through it. This is what four years of that actually taught me, including which restaurants around the Grand Place to avoid entirely.
