🇳🇴 Norway

Flag of Norway

Norway - my current place of residence, a place I like to call also a bit “home”. It has a lot of things that make live here interesting, not only the nature but also the people, traditions, and the local’s understanding of where they are in the world. From the partying during the football world championship to the nature during the seasons - Norway is a lot more than fjords and trees.

E39 - Welcome to Norway
#

Most visitors arriving by ferry in Kristiansand head north on E18 towards Oslo. Turn west instead, onto E39, and the road runs along the real Sørlandet and Jæren coast to Stavanger - past Norway’s southernmost lighthouse at Lindesnes, the Dutch-built old town of Flekkefjord, the WWII history of Jøssingfjord, and some of the country’s best beaches, entirely ferry-free the whole way. It is, for many, the first proper look at Norway - and a fitting welcome.

The hotel I use when in Oslo

Above the city at Holmenkollen, with Nordmarka starting right behind it, the Scandic Holmenkollen Park is the one hotel in Oslo I keep going back to - for a business trip as much as for a weekend with the dog.

Bus, day train, night train, car, or a short flight from Kristiansand or Stavanger - comparing how they actually stack up once you count the whole door-to-door trip, not just the time on board.

Whenever I am in Oslo, I stay at the Scandic Holmenkollen Park. It works equally well for a business trip and for a weekend with the family dog, which is not something I can say about most hotels.

Bus, train, car, or plane - an overview of the ways to get from Sørlandet to Oslo, and how they actually compare once you add up the full door-to-door time and cost, not just the time on board.

E39 - Kristiansand to Stavanger: the coast road that actually delivers

·2547 words·12 mins
While everyone unloading off the Hirtshals ferry turns onto E18 for Oslo, the road running the other way along the coast - E39 to Stavanger - is the one that actually looks like the postcards: a southernmost lighthouse, a Dutch-built old town, a WWII fjord, and some of the best beaches in Norway, all in about three hours of driving.

E18 - the most overrated road trip in Norway

·993 words·5 mins
Every summer the ferries from Hirtshals unload thousands of cars in Kristiansand, and almost all of them turn onto E18 expecting the ‘Norwegian Riviera’ road trip the brochures promise. Coming back from a tour to Oslo and expereinced the road again, here is why it rarely delivers - and where to go instead.
